Hey everyone, Welcome to my site here we are covering modals i.e what are different modals in English grammar and where we use which modals. Modals are one of most important part of our speaking because it just not only help us to improve ourselves effectively but also in our formal conversation or formal talk like if we have proper knowledge of modals then by using them we can present ourselves more confident and well mannered.

A.May/Might

We use may/might for the following situations:-

  • Possibility

The clouds are dark today. It might/may rain.

Here you can use both may and might but it has been written in many books that when the possibility is more than 50% of anything, then we use may and if is less then we use might. But you can use any.




  • Permission

May I come in ?
May I sit here ?

  • Blessing

May God bless you !

  • Present Progressive

He is not attending my call. He might be attending his class.

When something is going on in the present and we suspect that it might be working, then we use Might +be+ v1 + ing.
Like in the given example he is not attending call so this is the present situation and we are also not sure about the reason for not attending the call thatswhy we use He might be attending his class matlab woh class me hoga.

  • Future

I might be having my dinner at that time.

  • Past Modal auxiliary

Might+ have + v3

I am unable to find my book. I might have left it at my friend’s home.

(या हम पास्ट के बारे में बात कर रहे हैं जैसे कि मैं अपनी बुक नहीं ढूंढ पा रहा शायद मैंने बुक अपने फ्रेंड के घर छोड़ दी होगी तो मैंने अपनी फ्रेंड के घर बुक छोड़ दी होगी यह बात पुरानी हो चुकी है और उस को आशंका है कि हो सकता है उसने छोड़ी है तो ऐसी सिचुएशन में भी हम माइट का यूज करते हैं लेकिन माइट के साथ साथ

 B. Can/Could

can modalsWe use can/could for these following situation:-

  • Ability

I can teach English
I cannot go out in bad weather conditions

  • Permission ( informal )

Can I go out with my friends?

  • Polite request

Could you please help me with my work?
Could you please lend me some moneys?

  • Lost opportunity

I could have scored well in my exams ( मैं अपनी परीक्षा में अच्छा स्कोर कर सकता था। )
  • Past ability

I could sing well when I was a kid.

C. Should 

We use should for these situation:-


  • Advice and Suggestion 
You should wake up early.


  • Offer 


Should I help you?
Should I sit with you?


  • Regretting 

                    Syntax :  Should + have + v3

जब हमें अफसोस होता है कोई काम नहीं कर पाने का तो हम यहां पर यह यूज़ करते हैं

I should have watched that movie. ( मुझे वह फिल्म देखनी चाहिए थी। ) यहां मूवी देखना चाहता था पर वह देख नहीं पाया

I shouldn't have told you the truth.(मुझे आपको सच नहीं बताना चाहिए था।) यहां उसको अफसोस हो रहा है कि उसको सच नहीं बताना चाहिए था


D. Must 

You must study Grammar.

We use must for following situations :-

  • Prohibitions ( रोक )

Your phones must be switched off. (आपका फ़ोन बंद होना चाहिए। )
You must not sit here. ( It's not allowed )


  • Assumptions.(कल्पना )
                [ must + have + v3 ]

He has scored full marks. He must be very intelligent. ( उसने अच्छे अंक प्राप्त किए हैं वह बुद्धिमान होना चाहिए )
She must have eaten food. (खाना खाया होगा।)


E. Used to ( past repeated actions )


इसका इस्तेमाल हम वहां करते हैं जहां हम कोई काम पहले करते थे लेकिन अब नहीं करते तो हम used to  का यूज करते हैं

We use used to for following situations :-


  • past 
  • not in present 
  • many times repeated actions 


Examples :

I used to play volleyball. मैं वॉलीबॉल खिला करता था
I didn't use to study.
Did you use to study?


F. would 


We use would for these following situations :-


  • for offer 


Would you like to have a cup of coffee?
Would you like to go out?


  • would + have + v3 

 जब कुछ हो जाता लेकिन नहीं हुआ
 ऐसी परिस्थितियों के लिए हम इस फॉर्म का यूज करते हैं

Example :

You shouldn't have driven so fast. You would have broken his leg (तुमने उसका पैर तोड़ दिया होता)  पैर टूटा नहीं लेकिन टूट जाता इसलिए हमने यह फॉर्म यूज़ किया है, huya  नहीं लेकिन हो जाता


  • request  (जब हमें रिक्वेस्ट करनी होती है तब भी हम यही यूज़ करते हैं )

Would you mind if I  take your pen ?

G. have to 

situations :-


  • external pressure (जब हम किसी काम को करने के लिए दबाव डालते हैं या फिर हमें कोई काम करने के लिए एक कहा जाता है तो हम यूज करते हैं)


I have to go market to buy some flowers.(आपको कुछ फूल खरीदने के लिए बाजार जाना होगा)
You don't have to go for that work.
I had to go there.

H. need not 

जब हम कहना चाहते हैं कि तुम्हें यह काम करने की जरूरत नहीं है तो हम यह यूज करते हैं

You need not worry about it ?
You need not book a taxi.

I. dare not 

You dare not touch my phone.

J. ought to ( moral, responsibility )

You ought to respect your parents.
You ought to follow traffic rules.
